how do I reparent myself?
2022. Reparenting is giving yourself what you didn't receive as a child. Our subconscious and how we deeply feel about ourselves and others is formed during childhood. It is where we learn how to manage our emotions, what relationships look like, how to set boundaries, and many of our behaviors.
We live in a world that does not value conscious awareness, and many of us are raised by parents who only act and behave out of their own level of emotional maturity and awareness. Realizing our parents and ourselves are only working out of learned patterns from unresolved emotional trauma is the first step towards finding deep compassion and understanding for ourselves and others. We might suppress or ignore the reality of our childhood, but they are a gift for us to consciously heal and teach ourselves a different way of being.
The last few years were an incredible journey in learning to reparent myself, specifically the last few months. I felt myself slipping back into old patterns and ways of behaving out of that hurt little boy. I had a few moments of emotionally reacting, which recreated this spiral of shame, guilt, and self-hatred I had experienced. I thought of returning to my old lifestyle of partying and using drugs and just throwing almost a decade of work away. It took some deep self-examination, acceptance, and forgiveness to let that just be okay. I had to remind myself that it was okay to slip up and that I didn't choose to go backward. I had to remind myself of all my work and how far I have come in bettering myself as a man. I had to remind myself of the steps I have taken to set boundaries in relationships and let go of unhealthy workplaces. As scary as that can be for a peacemaker and lover, the universe listens to what we allow into our lives. Realizing relationships requires incredible self, honesty, and accountability from all parties. Instead of wallowing in shame and guilt, I used it as a tool to dig into my past and fuel my healing process. Holding ourselves high, even in moments of our humanness, will enable us to forgive and make steps towards a future we wish to create.
Let's take a moment to see ourselves and others in our humanness, to feel through these moments together; no more pointing the finger or blaming but holding ourselves and each other through these moments.
